Join the Youth Rock Climbing Team

Our youth climbing team offers a space for young climbers to grow their love for the climbing sport, community, and lifestyle through participation in youth competitive rock climbing.

Youth climbers between the ages 9-19 are eligible to join others their age to focus on mental, physical, and technical development in pursuit of their own rock climbing goals.

Fall Bouldering Season is just around the corner! Join the team this fall and register now for our youth climbing tryouts to be held on during two separate sessions for different age groups:

Age 12 & under tryouts Saturday, August 17th from 9:30AM to 11:00AM

Age 13 & up tryouts Saturday, August 17th from 12:00AM to 2:30PM

Rock Climbing Assessment & Team Grouping Details

Our experienced coaches host inclusive, experiential tryouts each season which allow our youth climbers, parents and coaches to decide which of our three youth climbing teams is the best fit for each individual’s rock climbing goals.

Youth climbers are assigned to groups based on the climber’s experience, skill, and personal goals:

DEVELOPMENT TEAM

Youth climbers getting started and with a desire to learn the fundamentals of climbing should plan to join this team with a focus on skills development.

The Development Team practices 1 time per week and individuals may be invited to participate more and in team competitions as they develop their climbing aptitude.

Practice Schedule

1x per week on Saturday

SAT: 9:00AM-11:00AM

RECREATION TEAM

Youth climbers with a desire to learn the fundamentals of climbing but who are in it for the camaraderie more than the competition should inquire here.

The Recreation Team practices 2 times per week and individuals may be invited to participate more and in team competitions as they build their competitive drive.

Practice Schedule

2x per week on Monday & Wednesday

MW: 5:00PM – 7:00PM
Blue Swan Boulders Advanced Climbing Team

ADVANCED TEAM

Youth climbers with a focus on leveling up their climbing and improving technique should plan to join this squad of advanced rock climbers.  

The Advanced Team practices 2 times per week and is expected to participate in 2 team competitions. Additional competitions are highly encouraged.

Practice Schedule

2x per week on Mondays & Wednesdays

MW: 5:00PM-7:30PM

COMPETITION TEAM

Experienced youth climbers with focus on strength and conditioning should plan to join the competition team as it prepares for USA Climbing (USAC) competitions.

The Competition Team practices 3 times per week with the expectation that all members of this team compete in all competitions available.

Background & Coaching Philosophy

With more than a decade of experience leading youth and adults in the outdoor adventure industry, education system, and various other settings around the world, Austin joined Blue Swan as a founding team member and pioneered the Youth Team as well as other youth and adult programs at the gym.

In addition to his role as Head Coach and Program Manager, Austin is a licensed mental health counselor who owns and operates his own private practice in downtown Orlando, Campfire Counseling.

Whether in leadership, coaching, or counseling, Austin’s philosophy emphasizes genuine care for the task and person in front of us, intentional alignment of thoughts and behaviors with values and beliefs, the pursuit of excellence at all times, approaching failure and risk with curiosity and creativity, and always remembering to have fun and laugh a lot.
